Dental Implants

A replacement for a crown or bridge can be held in place by a dental implant which acts as the new roots for a lost tooth. Although implants do involve placement into jaw bones of the patient, they are considered more conservative than a bridge because bridges require that the neighboring teeth be prepared for restorations as well. Dental Implant restorations are considered very aesthetic and most patients are very please with the fact they almost can't tell that they ever lost a tooth. In patients with missing teeth implants have become the new gold standard for restoring the remaining spaces due to there durability and longevity. Due to the fact that implants incorporate into the jaw bone, they help prevent loss of bone and recession of gums frequently seen when bridges or dentures are used instead. Benefits of implants are:

Cost effective : Due to the fact that only one tooth is being restored as opposed to the 3 or more teeth involved in bridges, an implant is often less expensive than a bridge

Tooth conservation: Because neighboring teeth are involved in the restoration, bridges remove valuable tooth structure which could have been conserved if an implant would have been used instead.

Comfortable: Implants are much more comfortable than dentures and don't need to be removed for cleaning. Implants are also much more stable than dentures and don't move around in your mouth while you're speaking or eating

Reliability: The success rate of dental implants is very high which makes their usage very predictable and reliable.

Who are likely candidates for dental implants?

Good general and oral health is a good prerequisite for ideal candidates. The jaw should have adequate bone levels to support the implant once in place. The patient's gum tissues should be free of gingivitis and periodontal disease. Smoking does impede on the body's ability to heal around the implant but is not considered an absolute contraindication.
